T.V. Casual Talk: The Secret Circle on The CW "Balcoin"

In "Balcoin" we see what hides within Cassie Blake and where her dark magic descends from 

"Balcoin" (episode that aired November 10, 2011) for some reason gained its entertaining angle again. Meaning that the delving into Cassie's family connection to black magic brings a great suspense that does seem to be keeping alive the t.v. watching of The Secret Circle for the better after last week's episode "Beneath" not being as strong.


In Balcoin (Season 1, Episode 9)
The witch hunters with Jake really are becoming determined to do something about Cassie. Thanks to Jake they now know that her dark magic comes from her father's side. Jake reveals that its magic from the ancient Balcoin line and Cassie's father is John Blackwell. Isaac (the witch hunter mentor of Jake's portrayed by JR Bourne) doesn't believe it at first since the witch hunters eradicated the line but Jake quickly mentions the Balcoins changed their name to Blackwell to hide themselves. accepts everything has changed and they'll have to give the information to the witch hunter elders of "The True Believers".  Cassie meanwhile wants to let Jake know that she has felt for sometime that they have a connection and if he'd like to be with her too then it'd be a great start with a dance hosted annually at Chance Harbor. But Jake outright rejects her telling her that he doesn't see her in a romantic way but is just trying to help her (even though it's obvious it pains him to say it). Jake doesn't want to involve himself with Cassie because he's in with the witch hunters which he later feels frustrated about and vents out his anger throughout his room. Cassie is about ready for the dance when across her window Jake notices her and really can't help himself. So he relents by showing up at Cassie's door and wanting to take her to the dance. He apologizes for his earlier behavior as well as agreeing that he does want to give their developing relationship a chance even. Jake is later put up by Isaac to use Cassie Blake's trust in him to get her to leave with them (the witch hunters). Isaac knowing Cassie has a close relationship with Jake. Things don't entirely go as planned and Cassie is further put into danger though this time by Jake.  Diana may start to be moving away from needing Adam all the time (make way for Cassie/Adam). And Faye, wow, she may really understand Jake when he truly is being honest. Since she agrees after Cassie is taken that Jake truly wants to get Cassie back from Isaac and the witch hunters. Although, after "Balcoin" more than a few will not be trusting Jake any longer.

Cassie Blake was a happy, normal teenage girl - until her mother Amelia dies in what appears to be a tragic accidental fire. Orphaned and deeply saddened, Cassie moves in with her warm and loving grandmother Jane in the beautiful small town of Chance Harbor, Washington - the town her mother left so many years before - where the residents seem to know more about Cassie than she does about herself. As Cassie gets to know her high school classmates, including sweet-natured Diana and her handsome boyfriend Adam, brooding loner Nick, mean-girl Faye and her sidekick Melissa, strange and frightening things begin to happen. When her new friends explain that they are all descended from powerful witches, and they've been waiting for Cassie to join them and complete a new generation of the Secret Circle, Cassie refuses to believe them - until Adam.  



Revelations and Theories

1. Revelation: Jake really shows despite his newly adopted witch hunter heritage he's willing to risk it for Cassie. 
Theory: We'll see more of Jake in future episodes even if this is the season finale. After all, he brings a intriguing cocky attitude to the show and he's gorgeous. Who happens to be another of Cassie's lover interests.

2. Revelation: Faye really does know Jake more than he lets on.
Theory: A while back Jake mentioned how Faye makes it seem that their past relationship was more than it was. In Balcoin, we see that Jake is obviously in denial and didn't tell Cassie the whole truth. Jake and Faye were very close once. Making it possible that we may see more of Faye and Jake together or flashbacks of their past relationship.

3.  Revelation: Isaac mentions that Cassie isn't the only person in the Circle with dark magic.
Theory: Faye is a guess to the other child with dark magic.  The theory being that John Blackwell had Faye with Dawn Chamberlain. After all, in the episode it is mentioned that she had always held a crush on John. Thanks Jane for the clue!

Greatest Performances 



Jake (Chris Zylka):

He made quite a show in rejecting Cassie. Being completely unemotional and unrelenting when he squashed any ideas there were that Cassie had that they could be together.
And then....
Donning a pristine formal suit and acting like a perfect gentleman when he decides to take Cassie to the dance. This was in many ways a beautiful Cassie/Jake together moment.

Isaac (JR Bourne):

Making such a huge presence in mentioning Jake's obvious interest in Cassie. While the guy isn't exactly the good guy he seems wise and fatherly to Jake. Little by little it's becoming pleasant to see him on the show. 

Jane (Ashley Crow):

Got to love her when she lets it slip that Dawn Chamberlain always did have a crush on John Blackwell in front of Charles Meade. Of course, Charles proceeds to rub it in! Some moments in The Secret Circle are priceless.
